Use of Artworks

License & how you can use the artworks

All artworks published on The Greats can be used for free under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) license.

In short, this means that:

  1. You can only use the artworks for noncommercial purposes.
  2. You can copy and redistribute the artworks in any medium or format.
  3. You can remix, transform, and build upon the artworks (е.g. change or translate the copy). However, in these cases, you must indicate that changes were made, and must share your content under the same license as ours (see below).
  4. You must always give appropriate credit to the author (see the short Read Me file attached to all downloads), provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
  5. If you remix, transform, or build upon the artworks, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.

See more about the license on the Creative Commons website.

I am an activist or a non-profit organisation - can I use the artworks in my work?
Yes! And that would be great. This is exactly why we created The Greats. Just remember to always credit the artist in the way it is indicated in the artwork’s profile and in the Read Me file attached to the download.

You can also use the work file in the downloadable folder to edit and transform the artwork according to your needs. This means you can translate the copy in your language, or change it entirely. You could also alter skin or hair colour, garments, and more, to make it work in your local context. But again - you must credit the author, and fully comply with the requirements of the license, no matter if you used it to create new material or adapt the current one.

Can I print an artwork I downloaded from The Greats?
Yes, you can. As long as you don’t sell it or use it for commercial purposes, you are free to download and print all artworks.

Can I sell merchandise with artwork from The Greats printed on it?
No. Artworks published on cannot be used for commercial purposes no matter if you are a non-profit organisation, a company or an individual.

You cannot sell anything with an artwork from this website, and cannot use an artwork as a visual to lead people to your fundraiser or charity drive.

Are the artists paid?
Most of the content you see on The Greats is commissioned by us, through one of our creative challenges.

On top of that, many artists have decided to open up one (and often – more) of their existing works, to support the work of activists worldwide.

In each new challenge, we always commission a chunk of people who have previously contributed work through one of our open calls.

We strongly encourage you to also use our website as a guide to which amazing artist you are going to commission for your next project. Nonprofits need creatives who care, and The Greats artists have again and again shown the vastness of their hearts.

Furthermore, if you decide to support our work, this will help us commission more and more artists for awesome content you’ll get to use and love.

What is this “Download Files” button in every artwork?
All artworks published on The Greats come with a pack of materials which make the use of the artwork easier. Like social media files, poster files, etc., but most importantly - a work file.

Can I use The Greats logo?
